What City in Texas Has the Most Car Accidents?

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) releases annual reports containing statewide statistics about car crashes and the resulting injuries and fatalities, as well as other important pieces of data.  These statistics provide a wealth of information, which can hopefully be used to make our state’s roads safer, about auto accident trends in towns and cities throughout Texas.  Our Dallas car accident lawyers compare recent TxDOT crash statistics for different locations to find out which Texas city had the most car accidents in 2015.

Crash Statistics Rank Top 57 Texas Cities with the Most Auto Accidents in 2015

As of January 2017, TxDOT has yet to release its 2016 reports on auto accidents in Texas.  Instead, we’ll be focusing on the most recent available data, which covers statistics for 2015.

Because Texas is the nation’s second-largest state and contains over 1,200 towns and cities, for simplicity’s sake we’ll be focusing only on cities where at least 1,000 accidents occurred.  Hopefully, you won’t see your town on the list below.

The 28 Deadliest Texas Cities for Fatal Car Accidents

Unsurprisingly, the state’s biggest cities also have the highest numbers of accidents, with Houston coming in at number one by a wide margin.  However, depending on what data points you emphasize, there are also other ways that Texas cities can be ranked when looking at car accidents.  For example, the list above simply ranks cities by their total number of crashes – so how does the order change when you rank by the total number of fatalities?

For the list of fatal accident cities in Texas, we’ve restricted entries to towns and cities with fatalities in the double or triple digits only.  We’re pleased to note that numerous towns reported zero fatalities in 2015, which, once the data becomes available, will hopefully prove true of 2016 and 2017 as well.  Unfortunately, there were still dozens of Texas cities where at least 10 crash-related deaths occurred in 2015.

  1. Denton, Harlingen, Longview, McAllen, Orange – 10 each
  2. Garland, Grand Prairie, Midland, Pasadena – 11 each
  3. Edinburg, Plano – 12 each
  4. Galveston, Mesquite – 13 each
  5. Killeen – 16
  6. Baytown, Odessa – 18 each
  7. Abilene, Amarillo – 19 each
  8. Irving – 20
  9. Corpus Christi – 24
  10. Arlington, Lubbock – 27 each
  11. El Paso – 48
  12. Fort Worth – 93
  13. Austin – 105
  14. San Antonio – 152
  15. Dallas – 173
  16. Houston – 203

Simply by comparing the lengths of the two lists, you can instantly tell that many of the cities with numerous accidents fortunately had a low number of fatalities.  Unfortunately, you can also see that some cities had disproportionately high numbers of deaths.  For example, Houston had more than twice as many accidents as Dallas, yet Dallas had nearly the same number of accident-related deaths.  From that standpoint, one could argue that it’s actually more dangerous to drive in Dallas, even though a greater number of accidents occur in Houston.
